The Paris Union High School District board on May 21 debated restructuring facilities leadership and voted differently on two job-description updates.
Administrators recommended returning to a two-director model after retirements left overlapping duties. Hector, who currently covers combined facilities and maintenance duties, explained the workload and the need for institutional knowledge during transitions.
Trustee Stafford strongly opposed creating an additional high-salary position, criticizing the timing and transparency of the proposal: “We’re paying more for less,” he said, arguing the district should avoid increasing administrative payroll when construction budgets remain active. Trustees and staff discussed salary schedule references and historical staffing models.
The board approved the revised job description for Director of Maintenance & Operations by a 3–2 vote and did not approve the revised Director of Facilities job description, which failed 2–3. Staff said the model keeps three administrative roles in the facilities departments (matching prior structure) and identified base salaries on the adopted schedule for the new classification.
Trustees asked staff to provide clearer process documentation and earlier notice for future organizational changes. The board’s votes will prompt staff to revisit how transitions and associated costs are communicated to trustees before hiring decisions are made.
