New Britain Common Council recognizes U17 Connecticut Cup winners, approves explorer funding, salt purchase and routine items

The New Britain Common Council on July 9 unanimously recognized the New Britain Soccer Club's U17 boys team for winning the Connecticut Cup and approved a slate of primarily routine agenda items, including funding for police explorer activities, building repairs and a salt purchase.
Alderman McNamero moved adoption of a resolution honoring the soccer club and its captain, Vladilchuk, and the council applauded the volunteer-run club's work in reducing pay-to-play barriers for local youth. The resolution passed by voice vote.
The council approved an additional $5,000 to send 14 explorers and five advisers to the Explorer Police Academy (July 20–26, 2025) at Westfield State University. A related piggyback expenditure of $1,500 to support 19 participants through the Hometown Foundation was also approved. Alderman Connors and Alderman Smemedley spoke in support of the program, describing it as personal and professional development for youth.
Council members authorized on-call repairs and replacements for the Stanley Quarterboat House so the interior can be used; Alderwoman Scott described the work as necessary to utilize the facility. The council also approved purchase of 2,000 tons of road salt for a total price of $174,000.20 (described in the meeting as roughly 4 million pounds).
In other business the council amended a report on early voting to add Sunday, Sept. 7 to the list of early-voting days and approved that corrected report; corporation counsel noted the council's action was effectively correcting a missing date. The council also referred an amendment to Article VII of Chapter 15 of the city code, in accordance with Public Act 25-8, related to motor scooters, dirt bikes and similar vehicles to the Planning, Zoning & Housing committee for further consideration.
