Ulster County panel approves purchase of about 30 fleet vehicles with green-fleet language added

The Ulster County Public Works and Capital Projects Committee voted May 12 to establish Capital Project No. 733 and authorize the purchase of about 30 county fleet vehicles for 2025, adopting a friendly amendment that explicitly ties the purchases to the county's green fleet law.

Committee member Legislator Litz raised the omission, saying the resolution lacked language showing these purchases would align with the county's fleet plan and green policies. Deputy Executive Laval replied that the county's green fleet policy is already in effect but that a more recently proposed fleet-management plan has not been adopted. Laval said the amendment should reference the existing green fleet law, not an unadopted policy.

After the amendment was proposed and seconded, the committee approved the resolution as amended. The vote was unanimous.

Why it matters: the added whereas ties the county's vehicle purchases to an existing environmental policy, signaling legislative intent to align procurement choices with the county's emission and efficiency goals. The resolution creates the authorization to spend capital funds to replace vehicles that county staff described as suffering from extensive rust and corrosion and not cost-effective to repair.
