Hudson County adds union-labor requirement to 32nd Street improvement contract

The Hudson County Board of County Commissioners voted on March 30 to amend the award of bid #7988 — improvements at 32nd Street from JFK Boulevard to Gregory Avenue (cities: Union City and Weehawken) — to require that "all work performed pursuant to this bid shall be done with union labor," including subcontractors.
Chairman Romano, speaking after the roll call on the amendment, framed it as a joint effort between the board and the county executive to ensure union representation on the project. "I just want to make a comment, and I hope this gets right back to labor, that this was an effort by all the commissioners on this board in conjunction with the county executive to ensure that labor was going to be included in this item," he said.
A commissioner relayed that the county administrator confirmed the final contract will require union labor despite earlier discussion. The amendment was approved by roll call during the meeting, and commissioners asked the record to reflect that the language was intended to cover work performed by the general contractor and by any subcontractors.
The board then proceeded to approve the remaining consent items on the agenda. County officials said the change was intended to ensure timely completion of the project and to protect labor standards in the scope of work.
