The Santa Maria‑Bonita School District board on June 11 approved three districtwide instructional contracts intended to standardize access and reduce inequities arising from site‑level purchases.
Administrators recommended a district license for EXL (a supplemental math product for grades 6–8) after a pilot showed inconsistent site purchases left some incoming sixth graders with variable preparation. Taking a single district license was presented as a way to ensure equitable access and simplify account management; district negotiators secured a price reduction, staff said.
The board also renewed and consolidated its AVID contract into a single district agreement primarily covering junior high sites, a step administrators said will help vertical alignment with the high school district and generate cost savings compared with multiple site contracts. District staff said AVID remains an elective and availability at the elementary level would require a separate fiscal conversation.
Finally, the board approved an expanded ESGI contract for teacher‑led progress monitoring. Administrators reported ESGI was used this year by 283 teachers and 25 specialists with over 5,500 students and more than 100,000 assessments; the renewal expands access to TK and includes negotiated discounts and central account management for easier reporting.
Board members asked about cost savings, enrollment counts and implementation logistics; district staff and negotiators said consolidation simplified reporting and purchasing. Each contract was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote.
The district said the purchases aim to reduce site inequities where some schools had individually purchased tools and others had not, and to allow teacher training and consistent rollout across all sites.
