Los Angeles Unified—s Board of Education spent the morning of its Jan. 14 retreat working through revisions to the district—s core beliefs, vision and mission, ultimately coalescing around language designed to center student outcomes and community partnership.
After staff and consultants framed the process, board members debated phrasing across three core beliefs: equity, collaboration and excellence. Members recommended active, commitment‑oriented phrasing for equity ("can and will" vs. "must"), asked that collaboration explicitly name primary partners (students, staff and families, plus labor partners), and proposed changing "deliver schools" to "create" or "co‑create schools" to emphasize partnership with communities.
The board agreed to a revised vision that removes the district‑centered phrase "premier public school district" and instead states: "Los Angeles Unified will graduate all students ready for the world to thrive in college, career, and life." The mission language was amended to emphasize outcomes and the character of instruction; the board favored language such as: "LAUSD provides a unique, holistic, rigorous, joyful and culturally relevant education that ensures all students achieve academic success and social‑emotional well‑being and prepares students to be engaged contributors to the world."
Why it matters: The revisions direct district staff to frame the 2026–2030 strategic plan around measurable student outcomes and community partnerships. Board members said the clarified language will guide staff in drafting operational goals, targets and the implementation plan staff will bring back for board review in June.
What comes next: Staff will circulate the revised text for public review and incorporate community feedback as they draft the operational plan, targets and the linked LCAP/budget package to present to the board in June.
