The Villa Park Senior Concerns Commission voted Feb. 2 to authorize up to $900 to cover the March SALT meeting’s food, paper goods and decorations and directed staff to obtain vendor pricing and delivery details.
Commissioners set an agreed budgeting framework of no more than $650 for food and beverages for an expected attendance of about 60 people, $200 for paper goods to carry through multiple SALT events this year, and up to $50 for table decorations. The March SALT meeting is scheduled to follow the commission’s usual format: coffee and donuts at 10:30 a.m., a speaker starting about 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and lunch served at noon.
Janet, the commission’s staff liaison, volunteered to check catering options and to negotiate pricing with local vendors. “If $500 is going to be the budget for the meeting, I can certainly go to High View and work with them,” she said during the meeting and agreed to confirm whether vendors will deliver boxed sandwiches and sides or require pickup. Commissioners discussed alternatives including boxed sandwiches with chips and cookies, using bulk purchases (Restaurant Depot, Costco) for cost savings, or preparing smaller items in the rec center kitchen if licensing permits.
Members discussed scaling March and other non‑holiday SALT meetings to simpler menus and reserving more elaborate meals for the December event. Commissioners noted that the police department typically provides donuts and coffee in the morning and that dessert or additional sweets are sometimes provided by the commission.
A motion to set the SALT budget at the agreed ceiling passed on a roll call vote. Staff will report back with vendor quotes, delivery options and confirmed costs so the commission can place an order on schedule for the March meeting.
