The City of Reading Zoning Hearing Board on Jan. 14, 2026 confirmed two previously requested variances and declined relief in a third case pending additional information.
At the start of the meeting the board moved and seconded to approve the variance for 700 Lancaster Avenue; the chair announced the variance was granted unanimously. The panel then approved the requested variance for 400 Washington Street after a motion and second. The hearings did not record written roll-call tallies in the transcript beyond vocal assent; the chair declared both motions carried.
On appeal 2511-385 (Gordon Street), Town Solicitor Steven Price told the board that unless the applicant files a written request to supplement the record for the February meeting the board must move to deny. The board then moved and seconded to deny the requested relief for now, subject to a condition in the written decision requiring a complete exterior survey and submission of supplemental materials. Staff were directed to notify the applicant and to email procedural instructions (copying staff members referenced in the record).
Next steps: the board indicated written decisions will be mailed to the parties; in the Gordon Street matter the applicant may file a written supplement before the February meeting to ask the board to consider additional materials.
