Students from across ABC Unified mark Hispanic and Filipino American heritage months at board meeting

Students from Willow Elementary and several ABC Unified high schools addressed the board Oct. 15 to lead pledges, present cultural work and share how heritage programming supports school engagement.
Willow Elementary students led the Pledge of Allegiance and the Peace Builders pledge and reported schoolwide improvements, including a reduction in chronic absenteeism from about 32% to 15%.
At the Hispanic Heritage Month awards, student Brian presented an original monologue about his father's labor in the fields. "I feel warmth and courage as I hold my father's hands," Brian told the board; the district Education Foundation awarded him a $100 scholarship and a certificate of recognition. The board also welcomed a senior field representative from Assemblymember Sharon Quirk‑Silva's office, who presented a small certificate on the assemblymember's behalf.
Later, student leaders from Aria, Gar, Whitney and other high schools delivered presentations for Filipino American History Month under the districtwide theme of "Struggle, resistance, solidarity and resilience." Student speakers described club activities, cultural performances and community service, and board members thanked students, principals and club advisors for their leadership.
The board adopted Resolution 24‑8 formally recognizing October as Filipino American History Month; the vote was unanimous.
