ABC Unified board discloses $6 million settlement after closed session

The ABC Unified School District board disclosed on Oct. 15 that following closed session it approved a settlement in an existing Los Angeles Superior Court matter.
The board announced that the settlement totals $6 million. According to the public disclosure on reopening the meeting, $2 million will be paid by the district’s insurance carrier and $4 million will be paid from the district’s unrestricted general fund. The board recorded the vote as 7–0 in favor of approving the settlement.
Legal counsel and staff cited the Government Code (including provisions that authorize closed‑session discussion of existing litigation and settlement negotiations) when they withheld details during the closed session. The board said identifying additional specifics at the time would jeopardize settlement negotiations and the district's ability to conclude discussions.
Trustees did not take any further action in open session related to the matter beyond the public disclosure of the settlement amount and funding sources.
