McLeod County commissioners voted April 7 to hire a vendor to perform a mechanical and electrical study of the historic McLeod County Courthouse at a cost of $9,350 from the county buildings major repair fund. Building services staff explained the study is intended to produce a complete scope and cost estimate to guide long-term preservation and modernization decisions.
Building services staff told commissioners the courthouse contains antiquated electrical systems (including knob-and-tube wiring and old fuse panels) and pneumatic mechanical controls that contribute to humidity and climate-control problems. The study will allow staff to assemble a prioritized, multi-year work plan rather than addressing issues piecemeal.
Commissioner Wright moved to approve the agreement; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote. Staff said the study will inform budgeting and future bids for major renovation work.
