Washington County board tables support for Home Base Iowa, seeks more detail from veterans commission

Robert Haege of Iowa Works provided information to the Board about Home Base Iowa, which the resolution described as a statewide program designed to connect military veterans and transitioning service members with career opportunities in Iowa. Veterans Affairs Commissioner Terry Philips asked the Board for more detail about what the designation would entitle Washington County veterans to, prompting supervisors to delay action.
The resolution as drafted states that a Home Base Iowa designation would demonstrate a community’s commitment to veterans, strengthen workforce development, and support local businesses. The Board’s motion to table the resolution was made by Supervisor Richard Young and seconded by Supervisor Bob Yoder; the item will be revisited after the Veterans Affairs Commission provides the requested information.
The Board took no further action on the item at the May 5 meeting. The resolution itself names county staff coordinating with Iowa Workforce Development and Home Base Iowa to complete the designation process if adopted.
