Nevada City Council on Wednesday presented a formal recognition to Peter Vanzant for his “invaluable service” to the city’s Planning Commission and for a long record of regional conservation work.
Mayor Peterson read the proclamation noting Vanzant’s more than seven years on the Planning Commission and earlier public service, including time on the county Board of Supervisors. Council members and longtime colleagues praised his role in securing protections for the South Yuba River and other local conservation achievements.
Lori Overberholtzer, who identified herself as a past planning commissioner, told the council she had witnessed Vanzant’s influence on wild‑and‑scenic river protections and on local environmental projects. Ricky Hec, who said he has known Vanzant for decades, presented a token of appreciation and recalled their shared activism on regional water issues.
Vanzant, accepting the recognition, traced his activism back to local grassroots efforts opposing a freeway project and described his years of community work: “I called I called and that was it. That was that started the whole thing and it was community after that,” he said.
The council closed the presentation with applause and a group photograph. No formal council action was required; the item functioned as an honorary recognition and community celebration.
