The ordinance committee postponed action on proposed firefighters’ bylaws and related ordinance changes and asked for fuller input from the fire commission, the fire chief and representatives of the volunteer companies before taking any steps.
Members expressed concern that some proposed changes could directly affect those who would be subject to the rules and that the commission and volunteer houses had not had adequate opportunity to review and respond. A committee member asked that the fire commissioner provide a report outlining how the process is meant to work and what customary practice has been for similar matters.
The committee also discussed that parts of the proposals touch on operations (which the commission and chief oversee), qualifications and term lengths for officers, and the differences between town-level authority and the incorporated volunteer companies’ bylaws. Members emphasized that any decision should support the long-term health of the Seymour Fire Department and its volunteer companies.
Committee members agreed to table the issue to the February 3, 2026 meeting and requested that the fire commission, the two volunteer companies (including Great Hill) and the fire chief attend prepared to present documentation and recommendations.
