FCPS, preservationists plan interpretive exhibits for Dunloring Elementary ahead of demolition

Fairfax County Public Schools presented interpretive plans for the Dunloring Elementary School site at the April 9 ARB workshop, showing how salvaged fabric from the 1939 entrance (pediment, columns and brick) and archival material will be reused in the new school's lobby and as an external wayside marker.
Sama Associates (project architect) explained the relocation of the historic entrance elements into a prominent two-story lobby and described a corridor exhibit and an exterior wayside marker that will interpret site history and the Taylor family, who once owned the property. EHT Traceries detailed research findings and draft text for interior and exterior panels.
Board feedback concentrated on audience and legibility: members praised the intent to salvage the entrance but urged substantially less dense text and more vivid imagery (yearbook or candid photos) for both the interior and the wayside marker so children and passersby will read and engage. Several board members recommended placing the external marker closer to bus drop-off and pedestrian routes, and suggested coordinating with the county's history and heritage staff on final wording and sign type.
Next steps: FCPS will work with the ARB, county heritage resources and sign fabricators to pare text, identify usable photographs with sufficient resolution, and confirm final marker location and mounting before building permits are finalized.
