Commissioners and staff discussed planning a community outreach event tied to a proposed sanctuary-city ordinance that the Human Relations Commission brought to council for a second reading. The subcommittee proposed a program combining a police presentation with an attorney from the Immigrant Legal Resources Center to explain recently changed tools for family preparedness (transcribed as "Family Preparedness Act 8495") and short-term guardianship options.
Staff (Barbara) noted constrained venue availability in May and asked whether the commission preferred weeknight events, which historically draw higher attendance, or weekend outreach. Commissioners discussed the possibility of partnering with the Human Relations Commission, Social Services and other local groups to avoid duplication and to broaden outreach.
The subcommittee emphasized the outreach event'9s goals: explain how local law enforcement may or may not interact with federal immigration enforcement, describe legal tools families can use to plan for detentions, and build trust between residents and police through transparent presentations and Q&A. The police chief said the department is willing to participate and offered possible facilities (police community room) if other venues are unavailable.
Commissioners agreed to continue scheduling work, coordinate with the HRC liaison and refine the program and PR plan; staff said they would circulate available dates after council'9s second reading. Several commissioners emphasized giving the effort enough lead time to secure speakers, AV and outreach channels so the event can reach neighbors most affected.
