Commission weighs two local-option sales-tax allocations, zoning changes and budget items

Meigs County staff presented two draft resolutions to place a local-option sales tax referendum before voters: one labeled in the packet as a 50/50 split and another that would allocate 50% to the school system, 25% to sanitation and 25% to debt service. Staff said the commission needs to choose which version to send to the ballot and recommended a vote at the next meeting.
"If it passes, it's got to pass. The referendum has to pass before we'll see any benefit at all," a commissioner said during discussion, stressing voter approval is required before funds are available.
Separately, staff introduced two rezoning resolutions to convert partial parcels to commercial use along Highway 58 and U.S. 60; staff said these zoning changes will move to second reading and described proposed uses as office buildings and resale/retail space.
On budget matters, staff explained a correction to an ambulance-service line item previously approved (a typographical error) and outlined ten budget amendments that included payment of a final invoice, adding a social-security line for mapping services, reimbursing a fire-department grant, a Homeland Security grant adjustment, a library personnel transfer and funds for playground equipment tied to a grant. The playground project for 10 Mile East Park will require an ADA-access connection to an existing walking trail; staff estimated equipment lead times of two to three weeks after approval.
Staff also presented a proposed three-year medical examiner contract from the current examiner, identified in the packet as Dr. Robert, at $4,350 per quarter—about a 10% increase over the prior contract. Commissioners asked questions about contract terms and liability language before considering the renewal.
Several informational items finished the workshop, including notary appointments, committee minutes, a Cherokee Trail State Park community meeting announcement and a report that 17 architecture firms had requested the county's RSQ package.
