The Norwalk Pension Board on April 8 tabled votes on two pension applications after members asked staff to document exactly when the applicants began the formal application process.
Board members reviewed applicants’ hire dates and birthdates while confirming the plan’s eligibility rule that regular minimum retirement eligibility is age 62 with at least five years of service. Members raised that some applicants had become age‑eligible earlier but paperwork was filed later, creating uncertainty about whether benefit start dates should be retroactive.
A motion was made and seconded to delay votes on both applications until staff could provide a clear designation of when each pension application was initiated and to confirm the submitted application forms. Staff noted they will supply the requested documentation at the next meeting.
Sharon (staff) told the board the applications could be pushed to the next month pending that documentation. The board approved tabling the items by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will return with the specific initiation dates and clarified application forms at the next scheduled meeting so the board can complete formal action.
