Aurora to pitch $90,000 contribution to update Piney Creek, Samson Gulch drainageway plan

Sam Scorza, long-range planner for Aurora Water’s stormwater utility, asked the Water Policy Committee to support moving an intergovernmental funding agreement to study session that would send Aurora’s $90,000 share to Mile High Flood District for a master-plan update.
Scorza said the existing plan is based on data from around 2010 and that the study area—shared among Aurora, Centennial and unincorporated Arapahoe and Douglas Counties—has experienced significant change. He said recurring sediment and sand movement have reduced detention-pond capacity and that updated hydrology and asset-sizing are needed to ensure future capital projects perform as intended.
Why it matters: the update aims to size detention and water-quality features to current conditions, reduce maintenance burdens and identify capital projects across jurisdictions. The work will be funded proportionally by tributary area with Mile High Flood District taking a central role in contracting and coordination.
The committee supported forwarding the item to study session.
