GGUSD honors winners of 48th First Impressions Student Art Exhibit

Garden Grove Unified School District trustees and staff used the April meeting to celebrate student success in visual and performing arts, honoring winners from the district’s 48th annual First Impressions Student Art Exhibit.
Dr. Lorena Sanchez, assistant superintendent for K–12 education services, said more than 1,000 students, parents and family members attended two award ceremonies on March 7 and that the exhibit displayed over 600 student works in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography and digital art. As part of a partnership with the City of Garden Grove, large prints of selected artwork were displayed at Village Green Park to highlight student work for the wider community.
Stacy Harris, coordinator of visual and performing arts, introduced Matthew Franklin (teacher on special assignment) and recognized community partner John Nguyen of Final Arts, who donated printed memorabilia (mugs) for award winners. The board recognized a roster of student winners: Rogue Marquez (cover artist; Garden Grove High School), Emily Morales Arroyo (State of the District cover; La Quinta High School), Chloe Hong (School Board Award; Sunnyside Elementary), Jayden Hong (Pre-K–6 Best in Show; Allen Elementary), Francesca Santa Maria (Mayor's Award; La Quinta High School), Honey Castro (Superintendent's Award; Santiago High School), Lauren Tran (7–8 Best in Show; McGarvin Intermediate), and Ariana Orozco (9–12 Best in Show; Los Amigos High School). Teachers and principals were named for each honoree.
The board showed a short spotlight video for April employees of the month and took group photographs with students and families. Staff told families they could pick up souvenir mugs after the meeting.
Why it matters: Trustees framed the event as an illustration of the district’s robust visual and performing arts program, which district leaders tied to academic and student-motivation goals across grades.
Next steps: No board action was required; the district will distribute commemorative items to students and continue community displays of student art.
