Coweta County school board approves multiple construction contracts, easement, trips and projects

The Coweta County Board of Education unanimously approved a series of action items at its March 10 meeting, including construction contracts, a change order, an easement and multiple student travel requests.
Superintendent Dr. Horton recommended the board approve an easement for the City of Nunan to construct the link extension near Nunan High School; the board approved the easement, and Dr. Horton said district staff would continue coordinating with city engineers on plan details including parking. The board voted 7–0 to approve the easement.
The board approved multiple renovation and construction contracts: a $3,165,357 contract with JNR Construction for phase-two renovations at Thomas Crossroads Elementary; a $3,279,743 contract with Media Construction for phase-two renovations at Jefferson Parkway Elementary; a re-roof for East Kawita Middle School awarded to Media Construction; and a re-roof for Elm Street Elementary awarded to Klein Contracting for $1,199,940 as presented by the superintendent. Each motion was recommended by the superintendent and carried 7–0.
A change order to modify HVAC electrical circuitry at the Central Educational Center was approved for a net cost of $31,664 after district staff and consultants reduced the initial estimate. The superintendent said the lower figure reflected work by staff and architects to reduce costs; the motion passed 7–0.
The board also approved an Eagle Scout service project at Thomas Crossroads Elementary to install 15 benches and four sun shades at playgrounds. The transcript recorded an estimated project cost as written in the meeting materials (transcript amount unclear); board members praised the student volunteer and his fundraising efforts. The motion passed 7–0.
Superintendent staff also presented seven student travel requests — including trips for indoor percussion and Winter Guard competitions; a drumline trip to Dayton, Ohio; the rifle team’s national championship in Port Clinton, Ohio; band and chorus events in Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee; and an educational vocal music trip to Nashville. Officials said none of the trips would cost the school system, and the board approved all requests 7–0.
The board voted unanimously to approve the minutes from its Feb. 10, 2026 meeting and to move into an executive session to discuss personnel, real estate and potential litigation.
What’s next: Several items approved at the meeting (renovations, re-roofs and other construction) are scheduled for work this summer, and two policy changes presented at the meeting were tabled for a vote next month.
