Students, nonprofit propose self-serve beach cleanup stations; council directs staff to work on designs

Meg Schwarz, founder and executive director of Great Lakes Great Responsibility, introduced students from Posen Consolidated Schools who presented a proposal for self-serve beach cleanup stations at Starlight Beach (and potentially Mishuis). Students said they have collected thousands of pieces of litter over recent years and outlined station concepts — wooden frames holding multiple buckets, pictorial instructions for children, and provisions for trash and recycling.

Student presenters Riley and Julia Pearl described common debris (cigarette butts, single‑use plastics) and said the stations would be designed for all ages while relying on volunteers and students for maintenance. Schwarz said initial construction is covered by a grant and organizers expect to set aside a modest contingency for replacement supplies.

Council members discussed design durability, year‑round placement versus seasonal removal, and logistics for pickup and recycling. The council moved to approve placement of cleanup stations at Starlight and Mishuis pending final design and location decisions and directed the organizers to work with city staff; the motion passed with council support.

Next steps: organizers will collaborate with city staff on final designs, identify exact locations, and return to staff/council with implementation details and maintenance plans.
