Box Elder School District facilities staff reported emergency sewer repairs at Lake View School and told the board the work uncovered aging Orangeburg pipe installed in 1962 that had reached the end of its service life.
Corey, the facilities presenter, described digging large holes in building hallways, removing deteriorated pipe and installing new PVC and a cured-in-place lining where the old material could be rehabilitated. Corey said the Orangeburg material is a wood-fiber product mixed with tar and that once sections have collapsed and filled with gravel they require excavation and replacement rather than relining.
District staff said the work completed over spring break addressed floor-embedded piping and restored restroom access; the immediate repairs were an estimated $90,000–$100,000 for the section already completed. Facilities projected that finishing permanent replacement across affected areas of the school could bring the total district cost to around $200,000 and said North Park and other older schools are being inspected for similar issues.
Administrators told the board they plan to request a budget addition rather than rely solely on the base next-year budget, and that some of the remaining pipe replacement work will occur during summer months to limit educational disruption.
Board members asked about prioritization and whether the repair funds are already in the capital plan; staff said they will include the estimated costs in an end-of-year budget adjustment and continue condition assessments at the district's middle schools. The district did not provide a final guaranteed total and said estimates will be refined as additional exploratory work and replacement proceed.
