Pennridge officials told the curriculum committee they will seek board approval to adopt the Foundations cursive program after the state’s Act 2 requirement added cursive instruction to the writing curriculum.
Staff said the Foundations program dovetails with the district’s existing K–2 Foundations print program and provides a third-grade cursive curriculum that builds on what students have already learned. The first-year implementation package includes consumable workbooks, classroom alphabet wall strips, desk reference strips and teacher instructor guides; staff estimated the initial cost at $9,691.92 and recurring annual costs at about $6,436.92. Leaders said the first-year amount is already included in the department’s proposed budget for next year.
Committee members asked whether the district’s current social-studies or textbooks include documents such as the Declaration of Independence in original script; staff said excerpts appear in existing materials and the intent of the mandate is to ensure students can read historical documents written in cursive. Staff also confirmed the state is not providing additional funding for the mandate.
The committee was presented with an actionable item to approve Foundations cursive; no vote was recorded during the meeting.
