The Lebanon Community School District Board approved a motion authorizing the district to proceed with the certified-contract reduction-in-force (RIF) process if circumstances require it, after receiving staff explanation of triggers and procedures.
Superintendent Jennifer Meckley told the board she hoped a RIF would not be necessary but outlined the contractual process required if enrollment declines or budget shortfalls force staffing reductions. Meckley emphasized the district must follow contract provisions for seniority, recency and other criteria and said she expects to provide the board with counts by certificated and classified categories rather than naming affected employees.
Board members asked about departmental integrity and whether specific program areas would be singled out; Meckley said the district will consider department and program needs and try to preserve critical career and technical education (CTE) programs where possible. She also said attrition, transfers and other strategies will be considered before layoffs.
The board moved and seconded the authorization and approved it by voice vote. The superintendent said the budget memo on the 17th will include a RIF-related plan (without names) and that additional detail will appear in budget documents to show where reductions might occur.
Next steps: staff will include a non-personnel RIF plan in the budget memo and notify employee associations as required by contract and policy.
