The Lebanon Community School District Board approved a community engagement plan called Walk the Halls that will arrange guided tours of district schools to highlight facilities conditions, safety and security features, and human stories from staff.
Superintendent Jennifer Meckley proposed the monthly-focus tours and said the district would invite at least one board member to each event, with staff providing background materials and a one-page fact sheet for each school. Meckley said the district’s architecture firm and facilities staff will help produce materials and that video or infrared imagery could be used to illustrate hidden issues such as heat loss or sewer conditions where access is limited.
Board members discussed logistics and accessibility. Members suggested scheduling a Green Acres tour in September to show conditions on a hot day; the group also agreed video or cameras could reduce safety or access constraints (for example, showing rafter or underbuilding conditions remotely). Operations staff noted the school’s original sewer line is approximately 80 years old and made of cast iron, an issue that cannot be fixed without major work; that detail will be shown by video where appropriate.
The board moved and seconded approval of the Walk the Halls plan and voted in favor by voice. The plan is a community event rather than a deliberative meeting; staff will circulate a doodle poll for volunteer board participation and schedule tours with at least three board participants when possible.
Next steps: staff will prepare one-page fact sheets and video materials, schedule the September Green Acres tour, and circulate volunteer sign-ups to board members.
