Asked about the role of school directors, Totower said directors should provide policy, guidance and governance while the superintendent executes those policies. On district finances, she said she has nonprofit treasurer experience and corporate P&L responsibilities and would be willing to serve on the finance committee to apply that experience.
On special education and enrollment growth, Totower said the board must make space for population growth while seeking creative budget solutions so tax increases are not the only answer. She supported multilingual outreach and called for listening to students, parents and teachers to identify priorities.
Board members explained the appointment process: the selected candidate will be considered at the boards next regular meeting (an agenda item is scheduled for Monday), may be seated immediately if approved, and is required by statute to complete orientation training within a set timeframe.
Speakers on the record include Miss Willa High Totower (candidate), Miss Anne Perry (board director and questioner), Brendan Keane (board director) and Michael Finnegan (board treasurer/chair). The board did not make an appointment during the special meeting; the appointment vote is scheduled for the next regular board meeting.
