The Pearl River County School District will receive two new classroom furniture sets funded by a recently awarded $26,000 grant, and district leaders said state representatives have secured approximately $1 million in appropriated funds for the district career-technical education (CTE) center.
Superintendent Mr. Weir told the board that the $26,000 grant — written by "Miss Ashley for natovich," a lead teacher for second and third grades — will buy classroom tables, chairs and a teacher workstation for two rooms. Miss Ashley told trustees that she worked with grade-level colleagues to select "space tables" and that the grant will replace older, mixed classroom furniture.
Mr. Weir also said he had received a notice from Representative Jansen Owen that, together with support from Senator Hill, approximately $1 million has been appropriated for the district's CTE center to support construction, equipment and related improvements. He said representatives may attend a future meeting to discuss specifics.
Why it matters: the $26,000 grant will directly update two elementary classrooms' furnishings, while the larger appropriation is intended for CTE expansion and equipment — a capital-scale investment that district leaders said could allow planned growth in career-technical programming.
Board members expressed appreciation to the teachers and representatives; Mr. Weir said staff will report back as projects move from appropriation to implementation.
