Stephanie Delas, a Murrieta Valley Unified parent and founder of CJ Smiles, told the board her son died in January 2022 after a battle with rhabdomyosarcoma. She asked the district to formally recognize every September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and to incorporate awareness activities and support for families into school events.
“I would like the district to join me and us in recognizing every September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month,” Delas said, describing her family’s experience and urging the board to use school events to raise funds and awareness. She suggested school-themed activities such as a “gold-themed football game” and other awareness events to support families and educate students and staff.
Board members responded that they would take up Delas’s request and discuss possible recommendations. The comment came during the public-comment portion of the meeting; no formal resolution was introduced or adopted at the session.
Next step: trustees said they would discuss the suggestion and consider a recommendation; staff follow-up was promised.
