Santa Paula board swears in new Area 5 trustee and approves library change order, gym-floor repairs

The Santa Paula Unified School District board on Wednesday administered the oath of office to Mike Kumazawa and approved two facility contracts during its May meeting.

Superintendent Mike Weinstein led Kumazawa through the standard oath affirming support for the U.S. and California constitutions and promising to "well and faithfully discharge the duties" of the office. The oath followed the board's roll call and reconvening from a brief closed session.

Later in the evening the board considered construction items for Santa Paula High School. Staff described change order number 002 for the high school library modernization, adding roughly $32,000 in late project adjustments and bringing the contract to about $3.548 million. A trustee moved the measure, it was seconded, and the board approved the change order by voice vote.

The board also approved refinishing and repair of the high school gym floor — including replacement of several boards, resealing, and repainting of the center-court logo — at a noted price of $48,000. The motion passed by voice vote after board discussion about vendor selection processes for projects under $50,000.

Board members also approved routine human-resources items, including the annual statement of need for 30-day substitute teaching permits and the declaration of need for fully qualified educators for 2025–26, and adopted the consent calendar.

The meeting closed with board and student trustee remarks; President Aoyo adjourned the session at 9:01 p.m.
