Board approves roofing, fence and flooring contracts; trustees ask for clarity on scope and materials

The Redondo Beach Unified School District board approved three facilities contracts Feb. 14 and discussed funding sources and project scope before voting.
Trustees approved the low bidder for the Burl Elementary kindergarten‑wing roofing project, which staff said will be funded with Measure S bond funds and scheduled during spring break. "This is the first recommendation of Measure S bond funds that I'll be making," Dr. Alper told the board, noting use of pre‑bond transfers authorized in January will permit prompt action.
The board also approved a fence replacement and retaining‑wall bracing project at Bernie Elementary, which staff said will be paid from deferred‑maintenance funds rather than bond capital. Trustees asked for the scope of work and noted a large difference between the low and higher bids for the same job.
For the South Bay Adult School flooring project, the board approved a contract with Genesis Floor Covering. Trustees raised questions about whether the purchase‑order report and contract fully separated materials and labor line items and whether the contract was all‑inclusive; one trustee warned of emerging concerns about luxury vinyl tile (LVT) products and potential outgassing. "I would hate to see this be one of the things we have to rip out later if there are health findings," a trustee said during the discussion.
All three action items passed with the board’s recorded votes; student advisory vote was recorded alongside the board’s votes.
