Taos board approves $197,138 fencing and automatic gates for high school

The Taos Municipal Schools Board on April 8 approved a $197,138.28 contract with Tri-West Fencing to replace perimeter fencing and install four new gates — three of them automatic sliding gates — behind TA High School.
Maintenance supervisor Alipio Mundraan told the board the rear gates and chain-link fencing are in poor condition and the project will improve bus ingress/egress, reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflicts and secure the campus perimeter. "If you saw the condition of the fence back there you'd understand why this was our priority," Mundraan said, explaining some gates are "twisted and falling apart."
Funding and timing: The project will be paid with a DFA severance-tax bond allocation; staff said the award must be expended by June 30 or the funding will be lost. Mundraan said electrical work for the automatic gates is not included in the $197,138.28 figure; that additional work is estimated at $30,000–$35,000 and staff indicated it would be charged to local SP9 funds.
Board action: After discussion — including finance and operations staff confirming the money was identified through internal review and must be spent before the grant deadlines — the board approved the contract by roll-call vote.
What’s next: Operations staff will finalize the electrical quote and return with that contract. The district said gates will be configured with remote and timer control to reduce staff call-outs and allow controlled access for activity buses and deliveries.
