A public commenter used the meeting's public-comment period to thank the Merced Firefighters Foundation for a range of support that helped students at local elementary schools.
"They were instrumental in helping a couple of my students," the public commenter said, describing one case in which a student's mother was struggling to care for four children and the foundation arranged an appointment with Dr. Lee so the child could receive glasses. "She showed up with her glasses and was proud as could be and was really successful," the commenter added.
The speaker said the foundation also provided warm clothing for children as temperatures fell and donated funds to allow eighth-grade English-learner students to visit the San Francisco Science Museum, bringing many students to downtown San Francisco for the first time. "They also got to experience a museum where they knew how to act and ask questions and their eyes were open to the whole experience," the commenter said.
The speaker recounted further examples of need and impact: some students previously lacked shoes that fit, and one child told the commenter, "now I can run and play with my friends at recess," which the commenter cited as evidence the donations helped students join the classroom community and build confidence.
The public commenter closed by directly thanking the Merced Firefighters Foundation and expressing appreciation for community support that made these outcomes possible.
