On April 9 the Williamsburg City Council took several routine votes: it approved a $5,000 Tourism Promotion Contingency Fund (TPCF) grant to Opera in Williamsburg to support marketing for two upcoming productions; it authorized the interim city manager to execute a renewal of a mutual-aid agreement with the National Park Service (Colonial National Historical Park); and it appointed three individuals to local boards and commissions.
Staff said the Opera request fits the TPCF objective of increasing overnight visitation through marketing new or enhanced events. Staff noted the total production budget for the operas is roughly $300,000 and the TPCF award would fund advertising and industry outreach. Council member motion and second were recorded and the roll-call vote was unanimous in favor.
On mutual aid, staff described the renewal as an extension of an existing agreement permitting reciprocal assistance between the city and the National Park Service police, with each jurisdiction bearing its own costs. Council authorized the interim city manager to execute the agreement.
Appointments: Council appointed Patrick McGedigan to the Economic Development Authority (unexpired term through June 30, 2029), Kira Cook to the Virginia Peninsula Community College Board (term beginning July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030), and Deb Snder to the Williamsburg Farmers Market Advisory Board (unexpired term through June 30, 2026). Council then adjourned the meeting.
