The Town Council on Tuesday approved contributing up to $5,000 to the Arizona Burn Foundation to support a smoke-alarm installation program targeted to vulnerable residents.
Fire Marshal Jennifer Peele Davis introduced Bridget from the Arizona Burn Foundation, who described the partnership: the foundation supplies alarms and volunteer coordination while the Florence Fire and Medical Department and community volunteers install devices at no charge. Bridget said specialized hearing-and-bedroom alarm systems can cost about $700 per household and that demand from rural communities is growing.
Bridget gave data from recent installations: on one walk the team installed 94 smoke alarms across multiple units, making 39 homes safer and providing fire-safety education to 68 residents; on a later walk they installed 124 alarms, making 43 homes safer and educating 65 residents.
Sophie from Florence Copper said the company would match the council’s donation up to $5,000. The council adopted the contribution by motion and voice vote. Fire Marshal Jennifer Peele Davis and council members framed the vote as a local investment in prevention and community safety; staff said donated funds will remain in Florence for local installations.
The council also acknowledged additional community donations (a $1,000 pledge mentioned in the meeting) and invited a photo opportunity after the vote.
