Edmond board approves $8.5 million in bond-funded turf, playground and facility contracts

The Edmond Public Schools Board of Education on April 1 approved several large bond-funded construction and equipment contracts, including artificial turf installations at three high schools, new playgrounds at elementary schools and flooring and secure-vestibule work at two buildings.
The board voted to award a $6,883,700 contract to TGS Sports for baseball and softball turf at Edmond Memorial, Edmond North and Santa Fe high schools, with administration saying crews will prioritize softball so fields can be used for practice and games by July if weather cooperates. Facilities staff described a plan to deploy three crews, one per field, and noted the projects’ timeline depends on design, delivery and rain delays; an approximate life expectancy for the turf was given as about 10 years.
Administration also recommended awarding a $1,040,396.38 subcontract to complete flooring and secure vestibule work at Angie Dau and Washington Irving under construction manager L5, describing the work as part of late-stage 2024 bond projects and early 2026 bond projects. The board approved that award after brief discussion about scheduling and summer construction windows.
Two playground purchases from Happy Playgrounds were approved: $117,668.30 for Will Rogers Elementary and $240,160 for Orvis Risner (the latter includes pre-K and main-area improvements and fall-protection turf). Administration said playground design typically takes two to six weeks and fabrication 4–8 weeks; certified installers conduct the installations for liability reasons. Board members asked about ADA access to equipment and said district staff recently obtained playground-safety certification to perform internal assessments and prioritize safe access when full renovations are not feasible.
Board members also approved change orders for Post Oak Elementary related to city-driven requirements and temporary playground relocation; administration estimated roughly $150,000 in added city-driven work and said the contingency percentage remained reasonable relative to the $35 million project total.
President Hobgood and the board approved all items by recorded voice votes.
