Policy committee to review wellness, student-appeal and safety rules; board enacts immigration-enforcement guidance
Summary
The district's Policy & Governance Committee will discuss a wellness policy (including middle-school movement/recess), combine two consent-agenda policies, and likely release a student-appeals policy for public comment; the Board recently enacted a state-required immigration-enforcement interaction policy and a detailed student-safety policy (0126).

Miss Welsh briefed PCAC on upcoming Policy & Governance Committee agenda items and recent Board actions on April 8.
She said the committee will discuss Policy 0116 (wellness, nutrition and physical activity) and research on ways to give middle-school students more opportunity for movement during the day within the constraints of Maryland's instructional-minute requirements. "In the policy itself, there is a paragraph that talks about the fact that there would be a team that would come together and they would actually research all of the evidence..." she said.
Miss Welsh also said two older policies will be combined for efficiency (policy 3186 on cost estimates and board resolutions with policy 9305 on cremations) and that the committee is likely to send Policy 8302 (student appeals of disciplinary action, previously 5115) out for public comment. She told members the Board enacted a state-required policy on interactions with immigration-enforcement agents and a detailed policy (0126) on student safety and reporting suspected child abuse.
On the legislative front, Miss Welsh said the session's "signing day" is April 13 and that staff prepare an implementation spreadsheet after the governor acts so departments know compliance deadlines and responsibilities. She encouraged members to watch for the public-comment posting when it is released.
