ABC Unified honors students and approves multiple contracts, CTE courses and settlement actions

The ABC Unified Board of Education spent the evening recognizing student and staff achievements, approving instructional materials and contracts, and reporting several formal actions taken in closed session.
Recognitions and student voice: The meeting opened with student-led presentations from Cerritos Elementary and multiple high schools. Students from Cerritos Elementary described school cultural projects and promoted the school’s "Flavors of Cerritos" event (May 16). The board also recognized Cerritos High School’s dance team, HOSA winners from the district’s CTE programs, tenure teachers across the district and a round of student speakers for Asian-American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Student presenters included Cassandra Lee, Amy Go, David Hong and Angela Wang, who spoke about cultural identity and leadership.
Closed-session report and formal actions: Returning from closed session, the board reported approval of a special-education settlement for student ID 448526 totaling $22,500 (breakdown: $7,000 attorney fees, $9,500 compensatory education, $6,000 independent educational evaluation) and acceptance of staff recommendation for a suspended expulsion in case 2425-10. The special-education settlement was reported as approved by a 7–0 vote; the expulsion motion passed 6–1.
Approvals and contracts: Trustees approved memoranda of understanding implementing retirement-incentive agreements across bargaining units (ABCTF, AFSCME, CSEA and management/confidential employees), adopted new CTE textbooks and approved three new CTE course proposals (EKG technician certification to start summer 2025; applied programming for interactive media and fundamentals of vehicle and aircraft systems starting 2025–26). The board also ratified a joint-use agreement with the City of Cerritos for shared athletics facilities.
Facilities and construction: The board awarded multiple construction contracts tied to Measure BB and deferred-maintenance funding: Gar High School modernization change order (small, <1% of contract), Artisia High kitchen renovation (grant-funded), and modernization projects at Leal, Carver and Nixon elementary schools. The board also approved a lead/abatement contract, and a district food-safety training and supplies contract.
Public concerns and follow-up: Public commenters raised safety concerns about nighttime graduation logistics at Cerritos High School, asked for transparency on ASB expenditures and fireworks spending, and suggested increased financial-literacy instruction. Trustees and staff agreed to follow up on ASB accounting transparency and graduation-safety logistics; administrators said some objections reflected late-stage planning timelines.
Next steps: Several construction and CTE approvals will proceed under grant or Bond Measure BB timelines. The board scheduled follow-up budget hearings for early June to meet county review deadlines.
