Council approves allowing alcohol at KitCares cornhole tournament after debate over precedent and safety

The Mount Airy Town Council on May 4 approved Resolution 20‑26‑11 permitting alcohol at the KitCares cornhole tournament scheduled Aug. 15 at Watkins Park, after council members discussed control measures and precedent for alcohol at park events.
Kylie Colbert, CEO and founder of the nonprofit KitCares, told council the event will have separate divisions for kids and families in the morning and adults later in roped-off areas. She said the group expects about 100 adult participants and roughly 50 in the family portion, and that organizers plan to sell canned beverages (no glass, no liquor), use wristbands or stamps and contract professional servers or vendors to control service and IDs.
Council members expressed support for the fundraiser and for KitCares—ommunity mission, but some voiced reservations about allowing alcohol in public parks and the precedent that sets, especially given proximity to Route 27. Several members recommended the organizers secure a licensed bartender/vendor, coordinate with the Carroll County Liquor Board, and work with MAPD on safety planning. The organizer—onfirmed plans to coordinate with the town and the liquor board as needed.
After discussion, the council approved the resolution by voice vote; the meeting recorded both ayes and at least one nay. Council encouraged the organizers to follow liquor‑board requirements, use professional servers and provide clear ID checks and site boundaries.
Organizers said registration will open in June and that proceeds support local families with medical needs; the council vote allows KitCares to pursue liquor approvals and event preparations subject to county and state requirements.
