City staff told the council they received an initial petition from the Wisconsin Rapids School District and adjoining property owners to discontinue a portion of Prospect Street between A Street North and 9th Street North to expand a school parking lot and improve student safety.
Staff said the school district and abutting property owners have discussed the plan with neighbors; one adjacent resident raised issues that the district resolved through negotiation. Staff advised that, if the council proceeds, the petition would be referred to the planning commission and public works committee for review and a public hearing; any demolition and resurfacing costs would likely fall to the applicant.
A council member representing the district’s area said the street vacation would fold an old church parcel into a larger parking design intended to reduce on-street congestion and create safer access for students. Council voted to refer the petition to the planning commission and public works committee for further review.
