Tupelo authorizes participation in latest opioid settlement round; city share to be determined

City staff asked the Tupelo City Council to authorize the city to participate in a new round of opioid-related settlements against six remaining distributor defendants.
A staff member explained this round is handled similarly to earlier settlements the city approved; once the state and participating municipalities finalize the agreement, the amount that flows to Tupelo will be determined and distributed through state processes. "We don't know exactly how much the city will receive in settlement funds from this particular settlement yet, but we should soon," the presenter said.
The council voted to authorize the mayor and city clerk to execute all related settlement documents so the city can participate in the distribution process when the settlement amounts are set.
No amounts were committed at the meeting; staff indicated distribution timing and the city's share depend on the final statewide settlement calculations and participation.
