Wausau meeting approves multiple construction contracts, pay estimates and licenses

The governing body approved a slate of procurement actions Wednesday, awarding low bids, authorizing payments and granting construction licenses for ongoing municipal projects.
Staff reported six bids for the Crocker Street Lift Station replacement and identified Haas as the apparent low bidder at $530,295.80. "So, we had six bids," said Lori, the staff presenter; meeting discussion noted the project budget was near $1 million and staff recommended awarding the contract to Haas. The body approved the recommendation by voice vote.
The council also approved a downtown utility relocation award to Haas. Staff said the low base bid for that project was $624,389.94; the council voted to accept the low bid.
The meeting approved payment of pay estimate No. 1 to MRD Group for work on the 2025 water treatment plant demolition in the amount of $57,617.50 and pay estimate No. 11 to J F Ahearn Company for $272,883.42 for screening improvements at the Wausau Water Treatment Plant. When asked if the Ahearn payment was appropriate, Eric said, "Yeah, should be good to pay."
Two contractor licenses moved on voice votes: a bituminous concrete pavement license for Integrated Construction Services LLC and a Portland cement concrete license for Integrated Construction Solutions LLC.
On the 2026 Equaflow lead service-line replacement project, staff recommended awarding to A1. Staff said they had identified roughly 80–100 sites so far and would award A1 work as sites are identified up to a maximum of 250; sites expected to encounter bedrock will be hydro-excavated first to confirm conditions so the city does not pay higher rock-related adders at sites without rock. A member moved to award the contract to A1 and the motion passed by voice vote.
Finally, the body voted to enter a closed session for consideration of pre-qualification statements for the 2026 North 8th Avenue street reconstruction and the 2026 asphalt paving project A, citing Wisconsin state statutes as the basis for the closed session. The meeting moved to closed session without further public action recorded.
The approved motions and payments will be acted on according to standard contracting and payment processes; staff said budget capacity existed for the approved awards.
