Pariagua said students and staff responded positively in surveys and community meetings: students sought hands‑on learning, internships, apprenticeships and certification opportunities, and parents and staff supported stronger career relevance while urging that core academics and student supports remain intact. He said he expects students to be able to change pathways and that the district would use tools such as Naviance for interest inventories.
Board members thanked Pariagua for the vision but asked for more information before taking action. Members requested details on facility readiness (for example, whether welding or shop spaces need exhaust or piping upgrades), personnel impacts, a PED‑approved 90‑day implementation plan, and tribal consultation with the Navajo Nation. A district official noted the PED has been engaged and that, if the plan is not approved, PED could consider a shutdown option, underscoring a degree of urgency.
Citing those outstanding technical questions and the potential effects on employees and the surrounding community, the board voted to table the proposal until next week while staff gathers the requested information.
The board did not take final action; next steps include submission of additional implementation details, formal tribal consultation as appropriate, and a return to the board for a vote.
