TOP students showcase vocational, independent-living and community-access skills

Students in the district’s Transition Opportunity Program (TOP) presented community-based vocational training, independent-living skills and job-readiness experiences; staff said they are expanding employer partnerships and support for families.
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified board heard a presentation from the district’s Transition Opportunity Program (TOP), which serves adult special-education students (ages 18–22). Students described hands-on vocational training — including cafeteria and community job sites — independent-living skills, and recreation and social programs.
Kim Taylor and TOP staff introduced students who spoke about favorite activities: Ryan said he enjoys the coffee cart and social skills work; Ben used an augmentative communication device to describe learning laundry and cooking; Jessica described community-based instruction and job placements including local businesses such as Kim’s Barbecue and the PV Library.
Staff told the board they are actively developing more community partnerships and would follow up with the board on a firm count of new employers; they encouraged local businesses to contact studentservices@pvpusd.net to offer job sites. The board thanked students and staff and asked for follow-up on how placements align with IEP goals.
Next steps: staff will provide the board a count of community partners added and continue to coordinate family education webinars and commencement events in December and June.
