Fruita honors students and approves student mural concept for Riverfront Trail underpass

The Fruita City Council recognized Henry Kamstra as Fruita Monument High School’s Student of the Year and Sean Gregg as Teacher of the Year, with Newt Klusemeyer, the school principal, describing their contributions to school culture and student programs.
Later in the meeting, Ciara Amon, Interim Parks and Recreation Director, introduced Andrea Downs and Public Art 101 students who presented a mural concept titled “Rolling Bones” for the Cocopelli section of the Riverfront Trail under the railroad bridge. The students described a multi-surface tunnel mural (ceiling and walls) that blends Fruita’s art, dinosaur heritage and music scene, and outlined necessary steps: clean mud left from recent floods, apply a background and undersketch, block in colors, add details, seal coat, and hold a public unveiling. Staff said the project is funded through the City of Fruita’s 2026 budget and that the art team will coordinate cleanup, staging and a completion timeline with Parks and Recreation staff.
Students suggested additional uses for the mural characters across city materials and proposed a community presentation once the mural is complete.
