Board approves city request to reduce setbacks for fuel-canopy at Clara Lane public works site

The Southfield Zoning Board of Appeals on June 17 approved setback waivers requested by the city so a canopy can be installed at an existing fuel island on the Department of Public Works site at 25501 Clara Lane.
Abdul Sadiki, director of public works, told the board the project involves installing a canopy to protect existing dispensers and to relocate a small fuel-management kiosk; the work will require some underground and pavement adjustments. Planning staff recommended approval, saying the proposed canopy would not have adverse effects on surrounding properties, would improve site aesthetics and equipment life, and is consistent with the zoning ordinance’s spirit.
No members of the public spoke on the item. Board members asked about the scope of construction and the project timeline (bids and likely construction in late summer), and several said they had no objections. Mr. Rogers moved to approve the waivers and the motion passed by voice vote.
The board’s approval was conditioned on the appellant securing all required permits and final inspections from the building department.
