Council approves non‑destructive training license at Motel 6 site with California Tahoe Conservancy

The South Lake Tahoe City Council on a consent‑calendar vote authorized a non‑destructive training license agreement with the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) to allow local and regional law enforcement and fire agencies to use the Motel 6 property at 2375 Lake Tahoe Boulevard for controlled training exercises prior to planned demolition.
Chief Jim Drenan and City Manager John Irvin explained the city expects a demolition permit to be issued by development services (the application was under review) and that CTC is planning a restoration project for the site. Council members and public speakers urged clear signage and advanced public notice during training to avoid alarming passersby on Highway 50.
Council’s motion authorized the mayor to execute the agreement and included direction for visible public notifications when training is underway. The motion carried unanimously.
The council also discussed the site’s longer‑term fate: several speakers suggested alternatives ranging from affordable housing to cultural uses. Council members said the CTC has authority to plan restoration and that the council will continue to request information about the conservancy’s broader acquisition strategy.
