Newberry County Council honors Whitmire emergency volunteers and proclaims Disabilities Awareness Month

Council recognized the Whitmire Fire Department and Whitmire Rescue Squad for long service and extensive response activities, and unanimously approved a proclamation designating March 2026 as Disabilities Awareness Month in Newberry County.
The Newberry County Council used part of its meeting to recognize local emergency volunteers and to proclaim Disabilities Awareness Month.
Tommy Long introduced the Whitmire Fire Department, noting it has served the community since 1922, currently has 28 members (including several with 33–37 years of service), and responded to roughly 130 calls last year from the main station and an Indian Creek substation. He then recognized the Whitmire Rescue Squad, incorporated in 1963, listing a roster of capabilities (EMT and paramedic certifications, trench and rope rescue training) and noting nearly 200 calls in the last year, including more than 50 medical transports. Long thanked both organizations and invited members forward for a group photo.
The council then read a proclamation recognizing Disabilities Awareness Month and encouraging increased opportunity and respect for residents with lifelong disabilities. The proclamation cites the national observance declared in 1987 and proclaims March 2026 as Disabilities Awareness Month in Newberry County. A council member noted the proclamation was personally meaningful; the council approved the proclamation unanimously.
