The Lauderhill City Commission unanimously voted March 9 to name the stadium and field at Lauder Hill Sports Park the Dr. Haywood J. Benson Jr. Stadium and Field in recognition of his founding leadership of youth-sports programs and longtime public service.
The measure, Resolution 26R-03-60, was moved up on the agenda and passed 5–0 after brief remarks from city staff, commissioners and community members. City Manager Kenny Hobbs thanked Benson for his service; several commissioners described Benson as a mentor and champion for youth athletics. Alan Brown, a resident, spoke in support during the public comment period.
Dr. Benson accepted the honor and thanked the commission and his family. The city presented him a plaque noting 15 years of dedicated service and his role in establishing the Sports Advancing Kids (SAK) awards program. Visiting local officials and former mayors attended the ceremony.
The resolution takes effect immediately. The commission held a brief photo presentation with Dr. Benson and family following the vote.
