Wicomico County council approves MDOT priority letter after correcting Baron Creek Bridge date

Wicomico County Council voted March 3 to approve its Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) priority letter for FY27–32 after amending project notes following a public comment that flagged inaccuracies about the Baron Creek Bridge timeline and an asserted board of education routing need.
Public commenter Jim Atkins said the county’s priority letter lists the Baron Creek Bridge with an incorrect washout date — “your priority letter says 2015 for Baron Creek Bridge” — and disputed language saying the Board of Education cites a need for bus routing on the road. Atkins urged the council to postpone action until staff verified the facts.
Acting Public Works Director Adam Corey and Planning Director Tracy Taylor told the council staff could correct the Baron Creek date to 2016 and remove mention of school-bus routing without jeopardizing other projects in the letter. "We can certainly get information to you tomorrow if need be to make some modifications here," Corey said. Staff emphasized the priority letter covers many projects that affect municipalities and regional partners and recommended not delaying the whole submission.
Councilman Hastings moved, and the council approved, an amendment to change the Baron Creek date and remove school-bus language as a condition of approval. The resolution passed unanimously.
What happens next: Planning and public-works staff will revise the priority letter language (Baron Creek date and school-bus references) and submit the amended package to MDOT; staff said corrections will not alter the substance or prioritization of other projects.
